What is Chess4D?
Chess4D is a browser game for playing four-dimensional chess and learning how familiar pieces move along X, Y, Z, and W. Its free 4D chess variant uses a 4 × 4 × 2 × 2 board containing 64 squares. Players can share one device for local two-player games or face a practice computer, without downloading software or creating an account.
The same 4D position can be inspected through a hypercube projection or four 3D board slices, with highlighted destinations helping players follow movement between layers. Two starting armies offer 20 or 32 pieces in total. The site also includes standard 3D chess and experimental 5D chess with time travel, where moves into earlier positions create branches instead of changing the original history.
Who it's for
- Chess players exploring spatial variants
- Beginners learning four-dimensional movement
- Two players sharing one device
- Players interested in branching-timeline chess

How to use Chess4D
- 1
Open the 4D chess room
Choose 4D chess from the homepage, then select local two-player mode or the practice computer. Browser play does not require an account.
- 2
Choose a starting army
Use the exploration army with 10 pieces per side to learn movement, or the battle army with 16 pieces per side. Both follow the same rules.
- 3
Select a piece and destination
Begin with a white piece and click a highlighted destination. Compare the flat board and spatial projection to understand how the move crosses layers.

Save the 4D game on the current device, export a JSON backup, or manually save it to an account to access it from another device.
Chess4D key features
A board with four spatial coordinates
X and Y locate a square within a slice, while Z and W identify the slice. All four axes belong to one shared position, with checkmate as the goal.
4D chess rules and move hints
The guide explains coordinates, piece movement, starting armies, endings, and controls. Legal-move hints also account for the moving player’s king safety.
Linked board views
A hypercube projection and four 3D slices show the same game. The flat and spatial displays update together after a move.
Local play and computer practice
Two players can share a device, or a local practice computer can play Black under the same 4D rules. The site has no clocks or online matchmaking.
Standard 3D chess
The separate 3D chess game uses standard 8 × 8 rules, including castling and en passant. It offers overhead and 3D views, local play, a practice computer, Stockfish, and local analysis.
Experimental 5D chess with time travel
Players can move between turns and timelines, creating new branches when traveling into the past. Five guided exercises introduce the rules; local saves, replay, undo, and JSON backups support continued exploration.
Chess4D use cases
Learn cross-dimensional movement
Follow one piece’s coordinates and highlighted destinations to understand how familiar chess movement extends across four spatial axes.
Play together on one device
Use local two-player mode to explore a 4D game with another person, choosing either starting army.
Practice without an account
Play White against the browser’s 4D practice computer and consult the movement guide when a position is unfamiliar.
Explore branching histories
Work through the 5D exercises before trying a local game involving past positions, multiple timelines, and historical king safety.

What is Chess4D?
Chess4D is a browser site offering spatial 4D chess, standard chess displayed in 3D, and an experimental 5D variant involving time travel and timelines.
Is Chess4D free to play?
The homepage offers free browser play without a download or sign-up. An account is optional for manually saving 4D games to access on another device.
Where can players learn the 4D chess rules?
The How to Play guide covers coordinates, every piece’s movement, the two starting armies, game endings, and controls. Board hints show legal destinations while checking king safety.
Can Chess4D connect friends on separate devices?
The site currently supports local two-player games on one device. It does not connect remote opponents or provide online matchmaking.
How does 5D chess with time travel differ from 4D chess?
The 4D variant uses four spatial axes in a single position. The experimental 5D variant adds movement through turns and timelines, with travel into the past creating a new branch.
