About WHOIS Lookup
WHOIS is the public registry record for a domain name. This tool queries RDAP — the modern, structured successor to WHOIS — and falls back to classic port-43 WHOIS when a registry doesn't support it. You get the registrar, registration and expiry dates, EPP status codes (such as clientTransferProhibited), nameservers and DNSSEC state, plus the raw WHOIS text when available. Use it to check whether a domain is about to expire, verify a transfer lock, or find the registrar's abuse contact.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between WHOIS and RDAP?
- Both return a domain's registration data. WHOIS is the older plain-text protocol; RDAP returns structured JSON over HTTPS and is now required for gTLDs. We use RDAP first and fall back to WHOIS.
- Why is the registrant name hidden?
- Since GDPR, most registrars redact personal registrant details or replace them with a privacy service. Organization names are sometimes still shown.
- How can I tell when a domain expires?
- Look at the Expires row. We also show how many days are left. Domains usually enter a grace period after expiry before they are released.
